Betley Youth - 1 v 3 - Hednesford Town YDS (AET)
On a pleasant evening at Eccleshall’s Pershall Park ground, both sides came confident of lifting the trophy, and the game promised to be a close and skilful encounter with both sides scoring 34 goals on their route to the final.
The game got off to a quick start and it was the Betley side who broke the deadlock after just 3 minutes when they slotted home from the penalty spot to take a 1-0 lead.
Hednesford Town YDS pressed hard and tested the Betley goal on a number of occasions, however could not find the equaliser. Betley held their defensive line well and threatened to double the score with their fast paced, counter attacking threat; however, there were no further goals and the teams went into the interval with only a penalty kick separating them.
Hednesford Town YDS came out and again pressed hard on the Betley goal but some quality defending helped them maintain their slender one goal lead until 75 minutes when Hednesford eventually got their break through and equalised.
The game headed into extra time, and this time it was the Hednesford side who hit home after 3 minutes, taking the lead for the first time in the match. Betley, who had led most of the game, then found themselves chasing an equaliser; however it was Hednesford who had the final say when they wrapped up the scoring after 19 minutes of extra time to take a 3-1 lead and lift the trophy.
We would like to extend our thanks to Eccleshall FC for our use of their excellent facilities and for all those in attendance that will surely have enjoyed an exciting game.
