Match Report: Senior Challenge Cup
SENIOR CHALLENGE CUP MATCH REPORT
Rushall Olympic won the Senior Challenge Cup for the fourth time after a hard-fought match against Leek Town.
The game began with a big chance for Leek on 10 minutes as a low corner caused chaos in the Rushall box before the ball was eventually blocked a couple of yards from goal. Leek went close again on 21 minutes as a diving header from Carr went just wide of the post.
Both teams had big chances just before the half-hour mark with Rushall hitting the post from close range, and Carr forcing a good save out of Weaver shortly after. Minutes before the break, Roberts produced a fantastic save to deny Cook and keep the scores level.
The second half started quietly with Rushall spending most of the time in Leek territory but yet to create anything clear-cut. The first real opportunity of the second half came with 15 minutes remaining as Rushall’s Brown shot from the edge of the penalty area but the effort lacked power and rolled just wide of the post.
Leek had a huge chance with 3 minutes of the 90 remaining as Stevenson found himself one on one with the Rushall keeper, but Weaver saved well. As the fourth official indicated a minimum of 4 minutes added time, Rushall began to pile on the pressure, and two minutes into the added four they found the breakthrough.
Fletcher danced his way through the Leek defence before placing his shot right into the bottom corner, giving the Leek keeper no chance! The game ended 1-0 to Rushall Olympic, who lifted the Senior Challenge Cup for the fourth time.
Both teams put in a valiant effort, but it was Rushall who ultimately prevailed, thanks to Fletcher's late winner.
